Mandate:
Conservation and management of the faunal and floral heritage of the state falls under the jurisdiction of the department. Working of the department is regulated under the J&K Wildlife Protection Act of 1978 (Amended in 2002).

Man Animal Conflict:
Following measures have been taken to address man-animal interface:
- Constitution of Co-ordination Committees
- Comprehensive Management Plan for handling of Man Wild animal conflicts submitted to Ministry of Environment and Forests (GOI) and State Planning Department.
- Do’s and Don’t’s for preventing wildlife conflicts being popularized.
- Payment of ex-gratia to the next of kin of the persons killed/ injured.
- Research Study of Man-Wild animal conflicts through the Wildlife Trust of India New Delhi.
- Research study on ecology of black bear through the Wildlife Institute of India.
- Memorandum of understanding signed with voluntary organizations i.e Wildlife Trust of India and wildlife SOS, New Delhi for census and survey, rescue and rehabilitation of leopards/black bears.
